Starting XI: January 27, 2012
#1-Today, American soccer golden boys (That’s right, plural. Deal with it, Landon Fanboys.) Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey face off in the FA Cup, as Everton travels to Craven Cottage to face Dempsey’s Fulham side. It will be an interesting tie, but I just want it over so asinine “Landon v. Clint” articles can go away forever. (More on this later)
#2-So, German giant Bayern Munich had a bit of a social media fail. This probably would have gone over a lot better, were it not for that awful 3-1 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach coming out of the winter break. They’re now tied atop the Bundesliga table with Borussia Dortmund and Shalke 04, though Munich holds the advantage on goal differential.
#3-The US Women’s National Team has breezed past the competition in the group stage of Olympic qualifying, but now it seems there’s a bigger issue than winning by *too many goals*. (Isn’t it nice when that’s the biggest controversy going?)
Hope Solo might not play in the make-or-break qualifier (Win the semi and they’re in, lose and they’re out). She practiced on Thursday, but her status is still up in the air. Okay, now that you’ve spit out your breakfast, take a deep breath. Costa Rica has never beaten the United States. Hell, Costa Rica has never *scored* on the United States. So, the ladies should be okay either way. Just…damn you, Dancing with the Stars.
#4-Soccer by Ives has a look at what should be a busy weekend for Americans Abroad this weekend. Hint: It goes beyond the aforementioned Golden Boy Showdown.
#5-Racing Genk (this writer’s favorite European club) seem set to sell youngster Kevin De Bruyne to Chelsea after the two have been making eyes at each other for the better part of a year. Last summer, Genk sold goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to Stamford Bridge, and it seems they’ll be sending out another young, promising talent. Such is life.
